Kenneth C. Garland Obituary
Kenneth C. Garland passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013. He was born June 26, 1915, in Garland, Okla., in Haskell County to Joseph Garrett and Blannie Jane Garland, who preceded him in death along with two sisters, Eunice and Norma Lee.
His beloved wife, Edna B. Monroe, who was his childhood sweetheart, preceded him in death in 1992.
He is survived by his son Donald W., and his daughter-in-law, Nita; two grandsons, Patrick and Timothy; and a great-grandson, Brian. He also is survived by his longtime friend and companion Myrtle Hays, and his good friend, helper and nephew Dennis Monroe.
His sisters and brothers-in-law, Ila and Ray Montoya, Anna and Wayne Brown, Ruth McCollister, sister-in-law Imogene Monroe, nieces and nephews Keith and Joletha Alford, Jerry, Wanda, Nora, Gerald, Glynn, Garry and Inez Monroe, Don and Ron Montoya, Gordon and Glenda McCollister, Myron Brown and Shirlene Fuerst all survive him.
Ken graduated from Portales High School, where he was president of the student council and immediately enrolled at Eastern New Mexico University in its first class in 1934. He and his wife were operating a small business in Portales when an opportunity was offered to manage a Sprouse Reitz 5 and 10 cents store in Alamogordo. Although they disliked it at first because it was so small, they stayed in Alamogordo because it was a great place to live and call home for the next 72 years, except for service in the U.S. Coast Guard on the Pacific Coast during World War II.
In 1958, he accepted an opportunity to be a partner in the Tom Charles Insurance Agency, of which he later was the sole owner. During that time, he won many awards and trips to international locations.
He served on the board of the First National Bank in Alamogordo for more than 38 years. He chaired the audit committee for many years and served on many other committees.
He represented the bank for many years on the New Mexico Bankers Association annual legislative trips to Washington, D.C.
Ken was a longstanding member of the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce, served as a director for 11 years, chaired many committees, served as president and was a past Citizen of the Year. At the request of the governor, he served as chairman of the road bypass committee. He also was on the low rent housing commission for several years. He was a longtime member of the Alamogordo Rotary Club and had 54 years of perfect attendance. He also served the club as president and was chairman of the Rotary Information Committee for many years.
Ken served as a member and president of the Alamogordo School Board. He served as master of ceremonies at the groundbreaking of the New Mexico State University-Alamogordo campus. He also served on the Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center board for several years and was a great supporter of the present board and administration. He was a supporter of the Boy Scouts and served as chairman of the White Sands Scouting District.
Ken was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. He held many positions, including being on the finance board when it was decided to move the church from its 10th Street location - where First National Bank is presently located - to the church's current location.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harry Riser officiating.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be the Board of Directors of First National Bank. Honorary pallbearers will be the Rotary Club of Alamogordo.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
Should friends desire, contributions may be made to Alamogordo Rotary Foundation Scholarship Fund in memory of Kenneth Garland, P.O. Box 713, Alamogordo, NM 88310. The Garland family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
