Retired Attorney
Kenneth E. Calkins, Jr., 76, of Alamogordo, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, at Betty Dare Good Samaritan Nursing Center.
Mr. Calkins was born Oct. 12, 1931 in Oklahoma City to Kenneth and Sara (Robinson) Calkins. He graduated in 1948 from Alamogordo High School where he was a four-year band letterman. Because his first love was music, he accepted a music scholarship to Eastern New Mexico University. Following graduation he joined the Army where he continued his pursuit of music. He was in a band that played during the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. He became a claims processor for Social Security while arranging music and playing for the Los Angeles Symphony. Upon his retirement from Social Security, he graduated from law school and for over 20 years practiced law. He moved to Alamogordo in 2004 and played with the NMSU-A Jazz Band.
Survivors include his wife Pamela of the family home; two sons, Michael Calkins of Tularosa, and Benjamin Andrew Calkins of Alamogordo; two daughters, Debra Greaves of Granada Hills, Calif., and Sandra Durnford and her husband John of San Antonio, Texas; a stepson Nicholas P. Newlin III of Riverview, Fla.; a stepdaughter Cynthia April Newlin of Brandon, Fla.; numerous grandchildren; and three brothers, Leon Calkins and his wife Anita of High Rolls, Morris Calkins and his wife Jennifer of Alamogordo, and Robert Calkins and his wife Diana of High Rolls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter Karen Britt.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Moon officiating.
Inurnment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.
