Lala Joyce Charles, 94, of Alamogordo, passed away Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Charles was born Sept. 14, 1915, in Topeka, Kan., to Charles Ivan and Ladema Longfellow Joyce.
She spent much of her youth in Carrizozo and graduated from high school there. Lala attended Lawrence Business College in Lawrence, Kan., before returning to Carrizozo to work in the law office of John Hall.
She met and married Ward Charles in May 1938. They moved to Alamogordo, where she served as Otero County clerk from 1942-45. She then joined the team at the Charles Insurance Agency, where she worked until her retirement in 1975.
Mrs. Charles was an active member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge Does, Tularosa Basin Historical Society museum and was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading and playing bridge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ward Charles, in 1977.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at the Hamilton-O'Dell chapel, with the Rev. Mary Taken officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to charities of a person's choice.
