Retired nursing supervisor
Lea Wertman, 88, passed away from cancer at her home on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, surrounded by her family.
Lea was born Jan. 31, 1921, in Temple, Okla., the youngest child of Samuel Field and Zana Davidson.
In 1940, at the age of 19, Lea received a degree as a registered nurse from the Oklahoma General School of Nursing. In 1945, she received a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. During her training, she met Harry Wertman, whom she would later marry on May 9, 1945.
Lea went on to work in hospitals and clinics during her career in Michigan and New Mexico. She retired from the former Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital as nursing supervisor in 1983.
Lea was a member of the Tularosa Lioness and Lions clubs. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Redford, Mich., and a member of the D.A.V.
Lea was preceded in death by her parents, Field and Zana Davidson; her husband Harry, in 1977; her brother, John Lee Davidson; and four sisters, Annie Cook, Eva Ammel, Grace Hill and Elizabeth Decker.
Surviving Lea are her two children, Beth Fierro and her husband, Armando, of Tularosa, and Paul "Budd" Wertman, of Alamogordo; three granddaughters, Valerie Lacy and her husband, Rodney, of Albuquerque, Annie Bugaj, of Detroit, and Melanie Crawford and her husband, Gerald, of Alamogordo; five great-grandchildren, Reace, Anya and Harlan Lacy, Tyrus Gwaltney and Billie Lea Crawford; two nieces, Coma Jackson, of Albuquerque, Roma Livingston and her husband, James, of Tularosa; and a nephew, Bryan Hill and his wife, Beverly, of Ridgecrest, Calif.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at 10 a.m. in the Hamilton-O'Dell chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Steve Trout officiating.
Committal services will follow at 2 p.m. at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery, with military honors by the Ft. Bliss Honor Guard.
Friends may call Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
