Leonard Sheffield Jr. Obituary
Longtime businessman Leonard Sheffield Jr. went to be with our Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 21, 2012, at the age of 81 with his family at his side.
Leonard was born March 5, 1931, in Lane, Okla., the eldest son of Leonard and Florence (Butler) Sheffield.
He graduated from Atoka (Okla.) High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of New Mexico.
He bravely served in the Korean War as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He married the love of his life, Sarah Jane (Emde), on Dec. 22, 1953, in Ruidoso. They celebrated 58 wonderful years together. He lived the American dream.
Starting as an employee, he then worked his way up to owning a furniture, carpet, appliance and hardware business in Alamogordo. He also had an interest in commercial real estate and enjoyed building and making property improvements.
He was a member of the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Businessmen's Association and the Gideons International. Leonard loved his country and served four terms in the New Mexico Legislature, improving people's lives and his community. He was a member of Lane Baptist Church. In 1993, Leonard returned to Atoka to spend time with his brothers, sisters and many friends.
He loved two things: telling people about Jesus and being a vessel for God's work, and loving and supporting his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Sarah Jane Sheffield, of the home in Atoka; children John Sheffield and wife, Teri Lea, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Larry Sheffield and wife, Tara, of Phoenix, and Janet Evans and husband, John, of Lawrence, Kan.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; siblings Lennis Fredrick, of Durant, Okla., Dorothy Fink and husband, Earl, of Pawhuska, Okla., Curtis Sheffield and wife, Mary, of Lane, Doyle Sheffield and wife, Sharon, of Lane, Barbara Broome and husband, Gene, of Tushka, Okla., Forrest Sheffield and wife, Patsy, of Tupelo, Miss., Jack Sheffield and wife, LouAnn, of Lane, and Larry Sheffield and wife, Gloria, of Lane.; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
