Lessie E. Porter Obituary
Lessie (Smith) Porter
Big Mom
Lessie (Smith) Porter passed from this life Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at her home in Piñon.
She was born to Alva and Ethel (West) Smith on July 2, 1926, in Artesia. She was a lifelong resident of the Piñon area. She attended elementary school at Bonita School, high school at Weed and college at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.
In 1948 Lessie married Irving Porter in Alamogordo. They lived on ranches their entire married life of 62 years. She was caregiver to Irving at their home for the last year of his life.
Lessie was a full-time ranch wife who helped with ranch chores, including raising dogie lambs each year. She saw and lived many facets of ranch life in New Mexico. The normal weather condition was drought; some years she welcomed and was grateful for ample moisture so the countryside and livestock were lush and plentiful.
She was an avid reader and seeker of knowledge. She was a gardener who always had a beautiful yard even though water was a scarce commodity. Lessie was a strong family person who was proud of her heritage, and wanted to be sure it was passed on to the younger generations.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Alice (Kick) McNiel; and her husband, Irving Porter.
She is survived by her daughters Toni Vann and husband, Carroll, of High Rolls, and Cindy Goslin and husband, Drew, of Piñon; her sister June Hall and husband, Joe, of Port Ludlow, Wash.; her brother Hunter Smith and wife, Bonnie, of Piñon; grandchildren Tara Skinner and husband, Cody, of Artesia, Cody Goslin, of Granbury, Texas, and Jeremy Rowe, of Los Angeles; and two great-grandchildren, Presley and Zane Skinner, as well as numerous precious nephews and nieces.
Pallbearers will be Steve Smith, Tom Smith, Alvie Smith, Troy Daley, Jake Daley, Monte McNiel, Matt Hall, Odie Prather, Alton Munson, Mike Gaba and Victor Gaba.
Honorary pallbearers will be all of her friends and neighbors of Piñon.
Graveside services will be held at the Piñon Cemetery on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at 10 a.m. with Eddy Coleman officiating. Lunch will be served at the Piñon Community Building afterward.
The Porter family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
