Lewis Kenneth Ussery was born in Norwood, Mo., on Aug. 10, 1923, to Abe and Vada Ussery. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret; his sister Hazel O'Neil, of Oklahoma; daughter Jodie Ussery, of Cloudcroft, and son Dan Ussery, of Glendale, Calif.; grandsons William Garney, of Deming, Neil LaSalle, of La Luz, and Aaron Ussery, of Beaverton, Ore.; granddaughters Priscilla Murray, of St. Louis, Mo., and Whitney Campbell, of Jacksonville, N.C.; and five great-grandchildren.
Ussery served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II with tours of duty on Johnson Island, Iwo Jima, as a gunnery instructor at Camp Le June, N.C., and as part of the protection detail for President Roosevelt's vacation home in North Carolina.
Ussery met his wife, Margaret, in El Paso, where they lived for 33 years. He retired from the El Paso Fire Department as a lieutenant in 1973. The Usserys moved to Cloudcroft where he joined the James Canyon Volunteer Fire Department and served as fire chief for eight years.
The Usserys moved to Reno, Nev., in 1992 where they managed a large condominium complex for 10 years. They moved to Alamogordo in 2003.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at Grace Baptist Church, 2324 Indian Wells Road. The service will begin at 5 p.m.
