Lillian Shulse

1920 - 2008 Obituary Condolences
Lillian Gertrude Shulse, formerly of Alamogordo, passed away peacefully in Spring, Texas on Nov. 23, 2008, at the age of 88, after a full, fulfilling life of joy and service as a wonderful mother, dedicated community and church volunteer, and a rewarding 30-year professional career in medical service.
Gertrude was born Aug. 8, 1920, to Agatha Johnson Dudley and Ulysses Grant Dudley of Center, Mo., where she grew up, attended school and married her high school sweetheart, Dorsey D. Shulse, in 1941 at the beginning of World War II. After Dorsey returned from overseas service, the couple bought a farm near Perry, Mo., where they raised three children, Carolyn May, Jean Ann and James Dudley. While living near Perry, Gertrude served as a dedicated volunteer for their one room schoolhouse.
In 1956, the Shulse family moved to Alamogordo where Gertrude was able to realize her lifelong interest in medicine, devoting 30 years of service as medical records administrator for the Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital.
After her beloved husband Dorsey passed away in 1976, Gertrude continued to work at the hospital as well as celebrate life. She loved travel, visiting Europe and Africa as well as seizing every possible excuse to visit her children and grandchildren, reliably attending promotion ceremonies, soccer and baseball games, graduations, and weddings. She played Skipbo with her great-grandchildren and watched Tiger Woods at tournament play.
Gertrude also loved to volunteer. After retirement in 1987 she remained active with the GCMH Auxiliary. She volunteered for St. Jude Mission and the Rosary Altar Society, the Alamogordo Senior Citizen Center, the Retired Senior Volunteer's Program (RSVP), as well as serving as president of the local chapter of Altrusa International.
After 1989, Gertrude also took care of her mother, Agatha, until Agatha's death.
Gertrude is survived by her children, Carolyn May Burnside and her husband Robert of Aztec, N.M., Jean Ann Feneis and her husband Ralph of Middleburg, Va., and James Dudley Shulse and his wife Carol of Spring, Texas; seven grandchildren, Jay, Beth and Eric Neeley, and R.W. Burnside of Aztec, Justin and Jesse Shulse of Spring, and Jeremy Shulse of Rosenburg, Texas; 14 great grandchildren; and two nieces Elaine Jackson of Denver and Marjorie Wybrant of Auxvasse, Mo.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Dec. 30 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Jude Mission with Father Tom Hoffman, S.J. celebrant, followed by a reception in the parish hall.
Private inurnment next to her husband and mother will be in Monte Vista Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be sent to The Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center Foundation Fund, 2669 North Scenic Dr., Attention: Gertrude Shulse Memorial Scholarship Fund, Alamogordo, N.M. 88310.
