Louis Abner "Sam" Porter
Louis A. "Sam" Porter passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, in Mesa, Ariz. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Schultz, of Apache Junction; his sons Kenneth, of Casa Grande, Preston, of Coolidge, and Louis, of Apache Junction; sister Alice Dryer, of Eager; brothers David, of Show Low, and Melvin, of Sun City; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Louis was preceded in death by his brothers Horace, Preston and Eugene, and sister Annie Locket McMahan. Louis was born in 1921 in Apache Creek to Joseph and Emily (Locket Gamble) Porter.
Louis grew up working on the family's farm and ranch, and attended high school in nearby Reserve. He volunteered for the Army Air Corps during World War II and eventually became a flight trainer, stationed mostly at airfields in Texas.
He earned baccalaureate and master's degrees from Oklahoma State University and was a well respected and innovative educator for more than 30 years. Louis' career in education took him to schools throughout New Mexico and Arizona and he is credited with developing agriculture curriculum and founding chapters of Future Farmers of America at many.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Mountain View Mortuary, 7900 E. Main Street in Mesa, Ariz. Services will also be held at Reserve Presbyterian Church in Reserve on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Apache Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Southwest, 450 N. Dobson Road Suite 108, Mesa, AZ 85201. Donations can also be made to the Dorothy Nolan Senior Center, P.O. Box 2670, Florence, AZ 85232; and to the Reserve Seniors Center, Reserve, NM 87830.
