Mable Clara Howard Tilmant Janes passed away Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, due to complications from a stroke and Alzheimer's at Paramount Parks Assisted Living in Eagle, Idaho. She was born Jan. 11, 1919, to Carl and Hanna (Grizzle) Howard in Caprock. She attended schools in Roswell, graduating 10th in her class, and later enrolled at New Mexico State University School of Engineering and was only the second female to enroll in engineering. She met Joseph August Tilmant Jr. at school and they were married on Nov. 11, 1939. They had one daughter and three sons. They resided in Phoenix and in Lynwood and Monrovia, Calif., and later divorced.
Mable and her sons moved to Cloudcroft to be near her family. She worked for telecomputing as an electronic technician at Holloman Air Force Base, retiring in 1976. When her parents passed away, she bought the Cloudcroft Hotel from her parents' estate. She met and eventually married George M. Janes on Aug. 1, 1969. They ran the hotel together until they retired, moving to their home on Burro Street in Cloudcroft. In 1993, they sold their home in Cloudcroft and moved to Alamogordo. Mable and George enjoyed square dancing, bowling and many community activities, as well as fishing and traveling, until his death in March 1999. Mable was active in the garden club in both Cloudcroft and Alamogordo and state chairman for the butterfly committee. She loved catching butterflies, competing in flower arranging - especially in petite and miniatures - quilting, pottery, basket weaving and swimming.
