Magdalena A. Lopez Obituary
Magdalena A. Lopez, 75, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 in Alamogordo, N.M. She was born on Sept. 12, 1937 in Mexico City, Mexico to the Reverend Amado Elias and Lucilla Garcia Tello Elias.
The daughter of a Methodist minister, Magdalena's family migrated to the United States from their home in Xalapa, Mexico when she was a child. The family spent a short time in the 1950's in Alamogordo before moving to Carlsbad. Magdalena met Fidel Lopez at Carlsbad High School. They married in 1957. Fidel and Magdalena, perpetual high school sweethearts, enjoyed a marriage that lasted 54 years. A devoted military wife to Fidel, Magdalena and family lived in many places across the United States, including Rancho Cordova, California, where they lived for many years. In 2000, Magdalena became a United States citizen, proudly voting in every election. After raising their three children, Magdalena and Fidel retired to Tularosa in 2004.
Magdalena was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as a generous and giving friend. No visitor to her house left empty handed. She was always ready to help her friends in times of need with a ride to the hospital or just an afternoon visit. Magdalena greatly valued education and worked hard so that all of her children could earn college degrees.
Magdalena took the most delight in helping to raise her grandchildren. Magdalena enjoyed many things in life. She was an avid sports fan, affectionately called "Coach" for the enthusiastic way she rooted for and suffered with her favorite teams, the San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco Forty-Niners. She read books voraciously. Magdalena loved beauty whether in making an old oak table into a beautiful antique or in playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on the piano. Through her life Magdalena saw the positive even in the most trying of times. Magdalena is survived by her husband, Fidel Lopez, of Tularosa; two sons Ralph Lopez, of Cambridge, Mass., and Tito Lopez and wife, Tracy Lopez ,of Vienna, Va.; daughter Kim Lopez-Gallagher and husband, Dr. James Gallagher, of Alamogordo; three grandchildren Mia Rascon, Maximus Rascon, of Alamogordo, Megan Mahoney, of Boston, Mass. and one great-grandchild, Ave Mahoney, of Jacksonville, Fla.
