Maria Carmel Mercier Obituary

On Sept. 6th, 2014, with her loving husband, Bernard and devoted children by her side, Maria Carmel Mercier was welcomed into the arms of God. Born Mary Jane Chavez, on Sept. 28, 1933, in a modest adobe home in Tularosa, New Mexico.

Maria was a miracle from the beginning. Believed stillborn, Mary and her twin sister Doris were wrapped in newspaper and placed in a shoebox beneath a nearby stove while the doctor struggled in vain to save their mother. An attending midwife noticed the paper moving and raced to revive the babies, saving them both.
From an early age Maria loved music and played the trombone in high school and received a college music scholarship. Maria married Air Force airman, Bernard Roger Mercier, on May 1, 1954, in Tularosa.
By 1965, the family grew to include eight devoted children- Deborah, Rita, Theresa, Michael, Mary Kay, Robert, Joan, and John Jon.Maria proudly served her country as a civil servant for 26 years, culminating her career as the Secretary for the Deputy of Flying Operations at McGuire Air Force Base. The couple retired to Sierra Vista in 1998, where Bernard lives today.
Maria was a devout Catholic who loved to sing, dance and work as a lay minister. She also loved to tend to her vegetable and flower gardens and feed the local hummingbirds. But her favorite pastime was being with her eight children and 17 grandchildren.
Maria could light up a room with her smile. She was loved and admired by all who knew her. Maria's spirit will live on in our hearts forever.

Celebration of Life Services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 1:30 p.m. at "Our Lady of the Mountains Parish," 1425 E. Yaqui St., Sierra Vista, Ariz.
