Maria Roeder Obituary

On August 14, 2016, Maria Roeder died at her home in Tularosa, N.M., after a courageous struggle with lung cancer, in the arms of her loving husband of 55 years.

She was born Maria del Refugio Coronel Parada on March 4, 1934, in Santa Isabel (today Gral. Trias), Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Marcelino Coronel and his wife Teresa. She was baptized by the local parish priest, Pedro de Jesus Maldonado, who was canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II. Her memories and devotion of that saintly man Maria cherished a lifetime and left her with an unshakeable faith as a member of Saint Francis de Paula church, where she served as a lector during the Spanish Mass, as well as the Guadalupanas Catholic Women's Group.

After a childhood in Santa Isabel where Maria attended school, her father took the family to Cuidad Juarez in order to afford his children a better education. In 1959, she worked as a legal secretary when she met her future husband, Fred, who was serving two years with the U.S. Armed Forces Air Defense School.

Maria's joy in life was making friends and serving people. After moving to Alamogordo in 1977, where Fred was transferred by the U.S. Forest Service, and in 1979 to Tularosa, Maria worked twenty-nine years as a "pink lady" in the gift shop of Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital. At her home, which she built jointly with her husband, she enjoyed her flower garden and fruit trees. She was an expert with her sewing machine as well as knitting needles and crochet.

Survivors include her husband, Fred, of the family home; brother Eusebio Coronel (Carla) of El Paso; sister-in-law Maria Elena Coronel; brother-in-law Roberto Soto; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Graciano Coronel, and sister Micaela Coronel de Soto.

The Rosary for Maria will be recited at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 20, 2016, at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., with Father Alex Urena, Celebrant.
Inurnment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Tularosa.

The Roeder family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the services.
