Marion Selby Spencer, 89, passed away in Alamogordo Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008. She was born May 27, 1919, at Fort Brown, which was the first U.S. military garrison in Texas, located in Cameron County, Brownsville, Texas. Her father was U.S. Army Capt. John Edwin Selby, who at the time was in the 16th Cavalry. Her mother was Carolyn Duckett Selby.
Marion Selby and Truman A. Spencer Jr. were married at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Roswell on June 14, 1939, by Fr. Ted Howden. Her husband preceded her in death on July 1, 1982.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan S. Frost, and husband, Jack, of San Carlos, Mexico, and Carrizozo, and sons S.M. Spencer, retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, of Rio Rancho and Carrizozo, and Stirling T. Spencer and wife, Carrie, of Carrizozo. She is also survived by brothers Dr. John Selby, of South Carolina, and Edwin Selby, retired U.S. Army colonel, of Florida. Also surviving are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Marion was a devoted member of St. Mathias Episcopal Church and served as Eucharistic minister and altar chairman for many years. She was a 25-year member of Sierra Blanca Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, recipient of Clara Barton Red Cross Award, Girl Scout leader, Red Cross water safety instructor and 4-H leader. She taught many young people from Lincoln County to swim. Marion shared a long and deep association with the military way of life. She was born and raised in a military family and was a military wife and mother. She also had strong family ties with, and was a patron of, the New Mexico Military Institute. Family services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mathias Episcopal Church in Carrizozo with the Rev. Cannon John Penn officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at Cedervale Cemetery in White Oaks at 2:30 p.m. Pallbearers are Truman McDonald Spencer, Justin Kirkbride, John Sugg, Jake Riddle, Dwayne Langley and Brandon Langley. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Paul Turner, Merill Longwell,  Dr. Al Sadowski, Hon. George Zimmerman, Fred English, Alan Langley and Henry Vega. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mathias Episcopal Church, c/o Stirling Spencer, P.O. Box 36, Carrizozo, NM 88301.
The Spencer family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
