Mary Linda (Sims) Alvarez Obituary
Mary Linda Sims Alvarez, 65, a long-time resident of Alamogordo, passed peacefully on Sept. 11, 2013. Linda was born in Las Cruces on Feb. 13, 1948, to Carl and Virginia Sims of Salem, N.M.
Linda grew up on a farm in Salem where she had many happy childhood memories. She played the piano for the Hatch Methodist Church. Linda held an office for Grand Assembly in the Rainbow Girls. Linda married and traveled to many places as a military wife, before settling in Alamogordo in 1979.
During the years, Linda worked as a substitute teacher while getting her associates degree in business. She then went on to teach at the International Business College for the next nine years where she met many students that remain friends of hers to this day.
For the past 17 years, Linda had worked at Tularosa Basin Telephone Company. She was an executive secretary, IT manager and then onto the position she held for the last few years as human resources/billing and safety department manager.
Linda is survived by her children Missy Pilkington and husband, Sammy, of Hobbs; Michael Alvarez and wife, Kimberly, of Alamogordo; grandchildren Courtney, Rhiannon and Devon Pilkington, all of Hobbs; and Michael and Matthew Alvarez, of Alamogordo. Linda is also survived by her sister Barbara Hartman and husband, Larry, of Des Moines, Wash.; brother James Sims, of Las Cruces; and sister Susan Martinez and husband, David, of Las Cruces; and sister-in-law Phyllis Sims, of Hatch, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Carl and Virginia Sims, her brother Denson Sims and her granddaughter Samantha Pilkington.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at Alamogordo Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Claiborne officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Betty Dare Good Samaritan Society.
The Alvarez family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements.
