M.H. "Mick" Heljeson Obituary
M.H. "Mick" Heljeson, of Alamogordo, died at home Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011. Mick was born in South Dakota to Homer and Isabella (Ballard) Heljeson on Nov. 14, 1930, and grew up in Mankato, Minn.
Mick served as a submarine radioman in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and graduated with an engineering degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. On Feb. 2, 1957, Mick married Helen A. Young, and the two moved to Pomona, Calif., where he began his career in the defense and aerospace industries.
For the next 28 years, Mick and Helen led an interesting and well-traveled life. In 1985, Mick starting working for the Department of Defense at Holloman Air Force Base and the two settled in Alamogordo, where they retired.
Mick was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen, and sisters Joyce Heljeson and Ardyce Johnson.
He is survived by his son Dana Adkins-Heljeson (Marla), of Lawrence, Kan.; daughter Jeanette Hammann (Brian), of Longmont, Colo.; grandchildren Kelvin and Greer Adkins-Heljeson; sister Shirley Hoehn (Alfred), of Faribault, Minn.; and sister- and brother-in-law Rosemary and David Martin, of Coon Rapids, Minn.
Private services will be conducted.
