Michael Joel Malis Sr., age 69, left his beloved family to be with his Heavenly Father on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016. Mike was born in Wheeling, West Virginia and has resided in Alamogordo, Ruidoso and Las Cruces, N.M., for the last 40 years.

Mike proudly served his beloved country in the U.S. Army beginning in 1968, earning the rank of Sergeant. During his enlistment, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Rifle Marksman Award. He was nominated to receive the Purple Heart Medal during his service but refused to accept it feeling that his lost brothers in arms were more deserving. After leaving the U.S. Army he continued supporting his country by enlisting in the Sea Bees, he then finished serving his country in the National Guard.

Mike worked for Continental Telephone Company in Ruidoso, N.M. He had his own business, Rocky Mountain Wiring. Mike then worked for and retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 2008 after 21 years of dedicated service.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Michael John Malis, and his mother Katherine Delbruge Malis.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Nancy Malis; first wife, Suzie Malis; his daughter, Erica K. Malis and son Michael J. Malis Jr.; his stepchildren, Stacie Ewing and Jason Duff; brother, Bernie Malis and his wife Luana Malis, as well as nieces and nephews.

Mike's favorite past time was restoring antique cars and trucks with his son Mikey. He also loved being outdoors, planting trees and gardening. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

The memorial service for Michael Malis will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at VFW Post 7686, Highway 70 W. Military Honors will be provided by the U.S. Army.
