Michael Robert Settanni Obituary

Michael Robert Settanni (formerly known as Robert Michael Smith), of Las Cruces, N.M., was born on Nov. 14, 1949, in Middlebury, Vt. Michael passed from this world on July 15, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arnold Sigmund Smith and Helena Margaret (Settanni) Smith.

He is survived by his long time love and fiancé of 24 years, Karen E. Duprey and her daughter Alexis V. Duprey, whom he raised as his daughter, and Karen's mother, Maureen Dugan. He is also survived by his two children, Erin Pashley and her husband Alex of Steamboat Springs, Colo., his daughter Maresa Smith and her three children, Trinity, Zayne and Bonhymn of Paonia, Colo. His brother, William Smith and Elaina Gochenour of Alamogordo and their sons, Asa, Jared, Weston Gochenour and Nathan Skorsted, his sisters, Sandi McAuliffe of Mishawaka, Ind., and her children Matt McAuliffe and Amy McAuliffe-Cooper; and Donna Rollins of South Bend, Ind., and her sons Sean and Todd Hennessey.

Michael served in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base during his tour of duty. He loved New Mexico so much that he came back from Vermont and made New Mexico his home. Michael was an electrician and worked for several electrical companies. He owned and operated his own electrical business, RS Electric, for many years. He worked for Johnson Controls and EG&G/URS and retired in January of 2015. He was also a successful contractor and builder of homes in Alamogordo and his homes were featured in the Parade of Homes. He and Karen made their retirement home in Las Cruces in September 2015.

He became interested in German Shorthair Pointers and owned three championship dogs. He enjoyed going to the trials, working with the dogs and was filled with pride at their successes.

Michael was a caring and gentle man and made many friends. He will be remembered for his kind spirit and sensitive nature to all who knew him well and loved him.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 30, 2016, at Hamilton O'Dell Funeral Home Chapel.
