Mittie Ruth Purcella McBride

Obituary Condolences

Loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother
Mittie was born in Roswell to Louis G. Purcella and Annie Elizabeth VanWinkle Purcella on Feb. 25, 1916.
She lived and worked on the family ranch and grew up riding horses, herding sheep and doing many other ranch duties. The boys were all older and had already left home. Mittie was the 10th of 11 children and was the only sibling left. During her life, she rode horses and played guitar. Playing the guitar was a great love of Mittie's as she played at dances from the time she was a small child standing in a chair with her youngest sister Jode and older sisters Viola and Peggy and brother Bill. They also played for all the family gatherings when they could get together.
Mittie stayed at home raising her children until her later years in Capitan. Mittie and George moved to Mescalero, where she then worked at the Ruidoso hospital as a nurse, retiring after 10 years. She then moved to La Luz, where she spent her last 28 years enjoying her family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter, Bonnie S. Chesser Hartranft and husband Danny L. Hartranft, of La Luz, where they have been her caregivers for the last 16 years; son Dee Warren Chesser and wife Daryl Bates, of Alamogordo; grandsons Landis Hartranft, of Las Cruces, Jared Chesser, of California, and Christopher Chesser and family; granddaughter Sarah K. Hartranft Hoskins and husband Donald Ray, of La Luz; and two step-grandchildren, Clint Williams, and Janne Reynolds and husband Romeo Casuga; stepchildren Wesley D. McBride, wife Aileen and their son and grandchildren, Helen Jane Chesser Robinson, husband Bob and children, Harry Chesser, wife Lillian and children.; and many nieces and nephews. She was delighted with her great-grandchildren Dakota Hartranft Hoskins, Dillan Hoskins and Seth Reynolds.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, John, Willie, Martin and Jesse; six sisters, Annie, Allie, Peggy, Ruby, Viola and Jocie; her first husband, Rody N. Chesser, of Roswell; second husband George W. McBride; and son Larry Cody McBride.
Pallbearers include Landis Hartranft, Donnie Hoskins, Jarred Chesser, Larry VanWinkle, Romeo Casuga and Chuck Reynolds.
Honorary pallbearers include Harvey VanWinkle, Bill McIntosh, Johnny Weldy, Lee Crandall, Willie Mack McInnes, Joe Lewis Winkler and Alvin Sparks.
The family would also like to give special thanks to Marjorie Mese, Harvey and Wanda VanWinkle, and to the wonderful people from the Alamogordo Hospice who helped in the final months of care for mother.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, in the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel with Billy Tucker officiating.
Interment will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.
Family will greet friends starting at 1 p.m. at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel.
