Retired Army sergeant first class
Nasir Mughni, 83, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008, in Alamogordo.
Mr. Mughni was born July 4, 1924, in McDonnell, Penn., to Abdul and Ola (Childs) Mughni. He served his country for more than 20 years in the military. He saw a tour of duty in Korea and two tours in Vietnam, and retired in 1974 as a sergeant first class. Following his retirement from the Army, Mr. Mughni earned an associate's degree in accounting from New Mexico State University. He continued his military connections with life membership in the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
For more than 30 years he was a member of the Masonic lodge. In Alamogordo's Prince Hall Lodge No. 11, he was the treasurer and a past master. In the New Mexico Grand Lodge, he was the current deputy grand master. He was also a member of Queen Esther Chapter No. 2, Order of the Eastern Star, and a life member of the NAACP. A charter member of the Otero County Martin Luther King Jr. Committee, he served as the organization's chairman for more than a decade. Always interested in civic issues, he served on the Mayor's Committee for Fair Housing. He and his wife Carrie were married in Alamogordo May 2, 1957, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Alamogordo in the summer of 2007 with friends and family.
Survivors include his wife Carrie, of the family home; two sons, Abdul Mughni, of Alamogordo, and Ahmad Mughni and his wife Patricia, of Hobbs; two daughters, Anita Barnett, of Hopewell, Va., and Almitra Watts, of Fayetteville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Ashiq Mughni, of Cincinnati; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Henry Johnson, of Alamogordo.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel with the Rev. Warren Robinson officiating.
Committal services will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery with military honors by the Army, and Masonic rites by Prince Hall Lodge No. 11.
Friends may call Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
