Obituary Condolences

Longtime resident
Natalie "Nat" Connell, 85, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, and born in Kirkland, Texas, on Feb. 13, 1924, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Saturday, July 4, 2009.
On July 13, 1942, the then 18-year-old Natalie Dill became a war bride by marrying Private Mac Connell at Scott Field (Scott Air Force Base) at O'Fallon, Ill., which is near St. Louis, Mo. After the war Mac and Nat lived in Memphis, Texas, until they moved to Tularosa in the early 1950s, and then shortly thereafter to Alamogordo. Over the next several years Nat worked as a bookkeeper, most notably at Culligan Soft Water Company on 10th Street. Nat was active in the community and an avid bowler, achieving statewide recognition. In 1974 Mac's job required them to relocate to Kekaha, Hawaii, for four years and then to Pueblo, Colo., for two years before returning to the Land of Enchantment in 1979 where Mac retired in 1983. After returning to New Mexico, Nat dedicated her time to managing a large family that included caring for her mother who lived to be 104, floral gardening, playing board games with family members and being an avid bingo player.
Survivors include two sons, Mike Connell and his wife, Elaine, of Wake Forest, N.C., and Pat Connell, of Tularosa; two daughters, Kathleen Wheat and her husband, Dick, of San Antonio, Texas, and Janis McWilliams and her husband, Woody, of Alamogordo; three grandchildren, Debra Schwertfager, of Alamogordo, Tina Wheat, of San Antonio, and Michael Connell, of Wake Forest; and four great-grandchildren, Sara and Caroline Connell, of Wake Forest, and Austin and Steven Schwertfager, of Alamogordo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Alvin and Lola Bell (Bass) Dill; her husband of 55 years, Mac, in 2007; and two brothers.
A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel with Dick Wheat officiating.
