Nathaniel John Whorton Obituary
Nathaniel "Nate" John Whorton, 52, a former Alamogordo resident, passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, in El Mirage, Ariz. Nate was born June 11, 1959, in Alamogordo. He was the son of Jack T. Whorton and Elsie L. Whorton, and the stepson of Marolyn S. Whorton.
He is survived by his daughter Nicole Whorton, of Chandler, Ariz.; his wife, Janise Anor, of El Mirage; his brothers Mark Whorton, of Alamogordo, Paul Whorton, of Dallas, and Joe Daniel, of Cache, Okla.; and his sister Diane Whorton-Gillespie, of Bellaire, Mich.
Nate graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1977. Nate had a passion for sports and was an exceptional athlete and a fiery leader. He was a three-time letterman and helped lead the Alamogordo High School baseball team to a state championship in 1975. As team captain, he led the American Legion Post 34 team to three state championships from 1975-1977.
He received his bachelor's degree in business management from the University of New Mexico in 1986. He obtained his master's degree in management from UNM in 1988. He went on to become an adjunct professor for the Department of Criminal Justice Studies at UNM. He was a New Mexico State Police officer and later worked many years for the United States Department of the Treasury as a customs officer conducting complex investigations into narcotics and contraband smuggling into the United States.
Nate later went into the mental health field working for the Arizona Department of Health Services Division, the Superior Court of Arizona and as a consumer report card administrator in Phoenix.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1114 Indiana Ave. in Alamogordo.
