Orvel M. Powell Obituary

World War II Veteran

On June 8, 2015, the Lord rosined up his bow and called home his best fiddle player, Orvel M. Powell.

Born in Scott County, Arkansas, Orvel aimed to be the best fiddle player in the country until Uncle Sam needed his services during World War II. After serving his country with honor in the 566th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion as a radar crewman, Orvel met and married his wife Eva in Portales, New Mexico. Following a honeymoon in California, they moved back to New Mexico where they spent their remaining years. Orvel retired from Holloman Air Force Base as a warehouse foreman. He and Eva were foster parents to 63 children, volunteered in their community and loved their church. Orvel had a great sense of humor and loved a good story. Orvel always had a peppermint in his pocket and used them to get a smile or his favorite - free coffee.

Orvel died in the Veteran's Home in Truth or Consequences with a big smile and exclaimed, "I'm goin' home! I'm goin' home! I'm goin' home!"

Orvel was preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 68 years, Eva, son, Randy, sisters, Wanda and Opal, and his parents, Clyde and Ethel Powell.

Survivors include his son, Scott and his lovely wife, Lisa, grandchildren, Jason Powell, Amy Powell and Cody Conway, great-granddaughter Abigail Powell and her mom, Heather Powell as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Orvel loved God and his country. His favorite ball cap said "God is Good, all the time." Orvel will be greatly missed, but we are sure he is happy to be with his beautiful bride again…..and together they are in Heaven looking for Orvel's hero, Bob Wills.

The Funeral Service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, June 19, 2015, at the Hamilton O'Dell Funeral Home chapel with Pastor David Crispin officiating. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.

The Powell family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services. Cremation will take place at PCS. To sign the online register book, please visit
