Otilia Chavez, 96, passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at her home is Tularosa. Otilia was born in Tularosa on April 13, 1912, and went to be with the Lord on Jan. 15, 2009. Otilia is well remembered for leading "La Marcha" with her husband Bernabel for many, many years. She was a member of St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart League, Los Quadrillas and an honorary member of the Red Hat Ladies Society (Tulie Rosies). Otilia participated in the Senior Olympics for many years and earned numerous gold, silver and bronze medals in billiards, basketball free throw and softball throw. She enjoyed playing bingo, doing cross word puzzles, riding in the car and was a die-hard Tularosa Wildcat fan. Otilia grew up in Three Rivers, where she learned to be a true "caballera," breaking horses and doing daily chores on the ranch. She often made trips to Tularosa on horseback to attend the dances she loved so much.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Bernabel Serna Chavez; a child, Carmen Louisa Chavez; her parents Sylvestre Nunez Gonzales and Rumalda Montoya Gonzales; two sons, Ernest Chavez and Bernabel Chavez, Jr.; and one granddaughter, Annie Chavez. Otilia was the last surviving member among all her siblings: Ageda Carrillo, Anastacio Gonzales, Julio Gonzales, Anita Bloth and Albert Gonzales.
Survivors include one son, Alex Chavez and wife, Adelina; daughters, Cecilia Garcia, Teresita Bugher and husband, Bucky, and Maria Elena Chavez, surviving spouse of Ernest Chavez, all of Tularosa, Loyola Romero and husband, Billy, of Alamogordo, and Helen Chavez of Las Cruces; 22 grandchildren; 42 great- grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. by Josie and Matias Chavez on Sunday, Jan. 18, at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the church on Monday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. with Father Tran, O.F.M., celebrant.
Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rudy Garcia, Albert Chavez, Robert Chavez, Steven Garcia, David Chavez and Arthur Chavez. Honorary pallbearers will be all the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The family will greet friends Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. before the rosary.
The Chavez family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral arrangements.
