1941 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Patricia Ruth Potter was born Sept. 28, 1941, in Roswell. She was the second child to Newell Daniel and Imogene Alice Smith. She was born between two floods.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; one sister, Lora Ann Smith; one brother, Joel E. Smith; and her husband, Leonard "Sonny" Potter.
She is survived by two sisters, Barbara Work, of Merced, Calif., and Imy Smith, of San Diego; two brothers, Tim Smith, of Winton, Calif., and Dan Smith, of Merced; her three children, Janet Salmans, of Merced, Clifton McCrady, of Casper, Wyo., and Tom Kyncy and his wife, Suzanne, of Citrus Heights, Calif.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two stepchildren.
Her family moved to Merced in the mid-1950s where she received her education. She was the founding member of the Merced County Day Care Association and was instrumental in the creation of the Child Care Food Program. She owned a gift shop in Placerville, Calif., and eventually the Miner's Café, also in Placerville. In 1995 she moved to Tularosa with her husband, Sonny, and became the owner/operator of the Country Living Mobile Home Park until she returned to Merced earlier this year.
She passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Merced after a long illness. Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, from 4-7 p.m. at Whitton Family Funeral Service, 740 W. 19th St., Merced. Funeral service will be Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Merced First Assembly of God, 1350 Yosemite Parkway. Mrs. Potter will be laid to rest at Fort Stanton Cemetery in Fort Stanton. Arrangements are under the direction of Whitton Family Funeral Service in Merced.
