Holding bachelor's degrees in history and education and a master's degree in educational administration, he loved education, his teachers and the children in his care. He received his Master Gardener certification in 2003.
Perry was a member of Hermosa Drive Church of Christ, the Artesia Library Board and New Mexico School Administrators. He was an active volunteer at the Church of Christ Outreach Center. He loved gardening and enjoyed sharing his bountiful harvests with many friends. He was an avid reader and also enjoyed photography and woodworking.
