YELLOWSTONE FISHING GUIDE

Peter D. Hendrickson age 80, a resident of Alamogordo, New Mexico since 1962 died Monday, February 6, 2017 in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

He was born April, 6, 1936 to Lyman and Roberta Phillips Hendrickson at Women's and Children's Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. A 1954 graduate of Wheaton (Illinois) Community High School, he entered the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico from which he received his BA in history in 1959 and MA in 1967.

During his college summers he was a fishing guide on Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. He met his wife Karen Crawford from Earlham, Iowa while working there in 1958. She was working at Absaroka Lodge on the Cody road to Yellowstone; a resort owned by Fred Garlow, the grandson of Buffalo Bill Cody. Other fishing guides with whom he worked were Helmuth Naumer of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the late New Mexico Cultural Affairs Officer; and the late Brigadier General Leslie L. Custer, former New Mexico National Guard Assistant Adjutant General.

Peter was an honor graduate of army basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and a regular army Specialist 5 finance clerk station in Hanau, West Germany with the 54th Transportation Transport Aircraft Battalion (Cargo Helicopter H-34 and H-37). He and Karen married there in June, 1961. He rotated back to the United States in August 1961 just as the Berlin Wall crisis was developing. Following his separation from the Army; he became a history teacher at Alamogordo High School in 1962, later joining the faculty of New Mexico State University/ Alamogordo in 1969. He retired as Associate Professor Emeritus in 1993.

He was a retired New Mexico Mounted Patrol officer and a Colonel in the New Mexico State Defense Force (statutory militia). He was a devoted member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He was also a Benefactor Member of the National Rifle Association, a member of American Legion Post 14, the New Mexico Sheriffs and Police Association and Royal Order of Atlantic Voyagers.

Peter's military decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the New Mexico Outstanding Service Medal, and the New Mexico Long Service Medal.

He was a descendant of Major General Richard Montgomery of the Continental Army who with Benedict Arnold led the invasion of Canada in 1775 while leading an attack against the lower town of Quebec during a snow storm.

Peter was preceded in death by his beautiful daughter, Tiffany, who was a sophomore and Presidential Scholar at the University of New Mexico and an active member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. He is survived by his wonderful wife Karen of 55 years. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Major Robert Montgomery Phillips Scholarship at New Mexico State University- Alamogordo.

A graveside service will be conducted at Monte Vista Cemetery in Alamogordo, New Mexico Tuesday, February 28 at 11 AM, with Reverend Bruce Freeman, Chaplain of the Alamogordo Home Hospice officiating.
