Phyllis Ann Matheney Obituary
Phyllis Ann Matheney, 79, went home peacefully to be with our Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, in Alamogordo.
She was born April 11, 1932, to Ed and Bernice Lorrison, of Harrisburg, Ill. After graduating from Roswell High School in 1950, Ann met her loving husband of 55 years, S.L. "Matt" Matheney. Matt and Ann were married Dec. 16, 1952, and had three children, Myra Kane, Randy Matheney and Lea Ann Hathorn. They also have four grandchildren, Matthew Kane and wife, Nancy; Kara Jo and Brett Matheney; and Justin Work.
Ann was a caring wife, loving mother and doting Memaw, whose sense of humor and infectious laugh will be fondly remembered by family and friends. Ann often remarked that her greatest accomplishments in life were her children, and especially her grandchildren. Faith, family and friends were the most important things in her life and she enjoyed every minute of time spent with them.
Military life allowed the Matheney family to travel the United States, stationing them in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Hawaii and New Mexico. They settled in Alamogordo where they were a part of the Boles Acres community for 44 years. As a military wife, Ann worked for the American Armed Forces Exchanged Services for 22 years, retiring from Holloman Air Force Base. Following retirement from Holloman, she served as the Boles Acres postmistress and worked with Matt running their family feed store for a number of years. Ann was a proud member of Eastern Star, Boles Acres Baptist Church and later became active at the Alamo Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and baby sister, Brenda Lorrison. A memorial service is planned for a future date; burial will be at Monte Vista Cemetery with her husband, Matt. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made in her memory to the Alamo Senior Center.
The Matheney family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
