Supportive wife, loving mother
Phyllis Marguerite (Lauver) Schmitt died early in the morning of July 10, 2008, her 85th birthday, at her home in Alamogordo. She was born July 10, 1923, in Springfield, Ohio, to Orville B. Lauver and Mary M. (Snyder) Lauver. Phyllis graduated from Wittenberg University in Springfield, where she had met her husband, Emmett Schmitt, and they were married that summer on June 13, 1945. Phyllis and Emmett had four children and lived in Melbourne and Louisville, Ky.; Walton, Ind.; and Dayton and Versailles, Ohio. Emmett served as pastor of Lutheran parishes in each of those places. The family moved to Alamogordo in August 1968 when Emmett accepted a call as pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church.
Besides being a supportive wife, loving mother and homemaker, Phyllis was an English teacher. She taught English at Versailles High School in Ohio and at Alamogordo High School and Chaparral Junior High in Alamogordo before retiring in 1978.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Robert Lauver, Hugh Lauver and Glen Lauver.
She is survived by her husband, Emmett, of the family home; three daughters, Mary Leslie Schmitt, of Alamogordo, Sarah Hadfield and husband, Daryl, of Carlsbad, and Margaret Ann "Margy" Schmitt Ajer and husband, Richard, of Spring Valley, Calif.; a son, Philip Schmitt and wife, Darlene, of Point, Texas; grandchildren Carrie (Hadfield) Hodnett and husband John, Matthew Hadfield and wife Kelly, Kelli Schmitt, Andrew (Andy) Schmitt, Katherine (Katy) Ajer, Rebecca (Becca) Ajer and Andrew Ajer; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Miriam Anspach, of Albuquerque, and a brother, Paul Lauver, of San Benito, Texas.
A memorial service for Phyllis will be held Saturday, July 12, at 2 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with Pastor Bruce Freeman officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.
The Schmitt family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral arrangements. Cremation will take place locally at PCS.
