Loving father, grandfather, Papi and brother
Raymond Rodriguez, 81, went to be with the Lord alongside his sweetheart, Elvira "Vera" Rodriguez, on Valentine's Day, Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009. He has been a resident of Alamogordo since the late 1950s.
He was born July 27, 1927, in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Esther Gallegos Rodriguez Gutierrez and Librado Rodriguez. He enlisted in the Army in 1945, retired a sergeant 1st class (E-6) and settled in Alamogordo in December 1965. Shortly thereafter he was employed by civil service and retired after 20 committed years.
Recently he was a volunteer for the 49th Medical Group, where he worked at the optometry and pharmacy clinics at Holloman Air Force Base. He was presented with certificates for an excellent record of sick leave usage from 1982 through 1987. He was also nominated and selected as Volunteer of the Month for the 49th Medical Group on several occasions.
Rod loved to fish and was a collector of many things. His favorite games were poker, dominoes, canasta, pinochle, cribbage and Mexican train, just to name a few. He also greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his children Frank Rodriguez and wife, Mary, of Brownwood, Texas, Raymond A. Rodriguez and wife, Ramona, of Fort Worth, Yolanda Hutcheson and husband, John, of Clovis, and Mary Ann Davidson and husband, Clayton, and Yvonne Christner, all of Fort Worth; grandchildren Sylvia Ann Rodriguez, Lisa A. Hutcheson, Nick Rodriguez, Lee Hutcheson, Gwendolyn Gonzalez, Sonya Summerhill, Natalie Ronquillo, Jesslyn Balderas, Marissa Ronquillo and Jaelyn Christner; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sisters Louise "Chita" Soliz Gomez, of Fort Worth, and Rosie Fernandez, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brothers Lee Rodriguez, Robert Rodriguez and wife, Rosalva, and Luis Rodriguez and wife, Glyness, all of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Elvira "Vera" Rodriguez, and his sister Marie Bargas.
A rosary service for Mr. Raymond Rodriguez will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Church with Father Bryant Hausfeld, O.F.M., as celebrant. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Nick Rodriguez, Lee Hutcheson, Jesse Rodriguez, Michael Hernandez, Xavier Rodriguez, Albert Fuentes, Pedro Perez and Jim Ward.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home, 2301 First St. in Alamogordo.
