Richard C. "Papa" Akins Obituary
Richard C. "Papa" Akins, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many, departed this earth Saturday, April 7, 2012, after an unexpected illness. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on April 10, 1931.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Betty Jane Akins; a grandson, Kevin Hicks; his parents and his five siblings.
He is survived by his children Diana Akins (Largo, Fla.), Jerry and Sandy Akins (Auburn, Ala.), Sheri and Danny Mendoza (Bent), and Robert Akins (Rio Rancho); grandchildren Jason and Deanna Schlensig (La Luz), Stephanie and Jarod Colbert (Alamogordo), Dustin Lee and Stephanie Travis (Alamogordo), Danielle Mendoza (Bent), Chris and Kim Hicks (Little Rock, Ark.), Ricky H. and Zachary Akins (Auburn), Christina Erbert, (Albuquerque), Felicia Heath (Arizona); unofficial grandson Dave Stewart (Gypsum, Colo.); and his 10 great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his spoiled pets, Belly, Dolly and Dude.
He retired from the United States Air Force after 27 years as a chief master sergeant. He served in both the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. He also retired from Alamo Pipe after 20-plus years. He attended Grace United Methodist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Elks, VFW, Air Force Association, Air Force Sergeants Association and the "Old Farts Thursday Lunch Group." To many he was known as the most dedicated and loyal fan of school athletics regardless of the season, the sport or the school.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary Taken officiating.
Interment will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
