Sept. 1, 1922 to April 23, 2008
Richard E. Smith, 85, of Portales, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at the VA Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Portales Cemetery in Portales. Pallbearers will be the American Legion members of Post 0031.
Richard was born Sept. 1, 1922, to Arthur J. and Ruby (Spalding) Smith in Palisado, Colo. He married Louise Moritzky May 24, 1996, in Tucumcari. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a welder and a member of Clovis-Portales Elks Lodge No. 1244, lifetime member of VFW Post 3015, Loyal Order of Moose in Alamogordo, American Legion Post 0031, life member of the Good Sams Club, charter member of Las Paisanos, life member of the DAV, and of the Blind Vets Association.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Moritzky Smith, of the family home; four daughters, Gladys Irene Smith Campbell and husband Billy, of Panama City, Fla.; Edyth Paulett Smith Hughes and husband James, of Roswell; Ruby Belle Smith Dobrick and husband David, of Eastman, Ga.; and Polly Ruth Smith Patterson and husband Keith, of Sunset, Texas; four stepsons, Dr. Stanley S. Carroll and wife Alissa, of West Virginia, Eugene Carroll and wife Jennifer, of Roswell, Dr. Roy A Carroll and wife Angeline, of Columbus, Ga., and Harlan Carroll and wife Janie, of Las Vegas, Nev.; a stepbrother, Bob Stowe and wife Judy, of Ocean Park, Ore.; nine grandchildren, Micheal S. Smith, of Texas, Michael Dobrick, of Kentucky, Bryan H. Martin, of Texas, Ricky John Brunson, of Colorado, James "Jamie" Hughes, of Texas, Lynn Brunson, of California, Marnie Jean Lewis, of New York, Jeffery M. Hughes, of New Mexico, and Henry Don Sartin, of Georgia; nine step-grandchildren, Shannon Carroll, of West Virginia, Austin Carroll, of Georgia, Kelly Jo Carroll, of West Virginia, Stacy Carroll, of Georgia, Joni Carroll, of Georgia, Falon Carroll, of Georgia, Tayni Carroll, of Oklahoma, Cheyenne Carroll, of Georgia, Tanner Carroll, of New Mexico, and Caitlin Carroll, of Nevada; and 18 great-grandchildren.
