Richard Raymond Lewis Obituary
New Mexico was still a territory when Richard "Dick" Lewis was born in a log cabin two miles south of Weed, the eighth of 10 children born to Dave and Sophronia Lewis. He was the only living grandson of George Washington and Mary Elizabeth Lewis who arrived by wagon train in 1884. During his lifetime, the world has moved from wagon wheel to rocket ship.
Dick served as a teacher, principal and superintendent in several New Mexico towns from 1928 to 1974. Since retiring in 1974, Dick served on many city and state committees that focused on the education and well being of senior citizens.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Edith, in 1990 and a son, Wesley, in 2007. He is survived by two daughters, Lynette Robertson and Jean Schimmer and her husband, Bill, of Alamogordo; a foster daughter, Jolene Cox, of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives.
Over the past seven years, Dick received excellent, loving care as a resident of the Aristocrat Assisted Living facility.
There will be a memorial celebration of his life for family and friends Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 16th Street and Cuba Avenue, with the Rev. Mary Taken officiating. The family will greet friends at a reception following the service.
Should friends desire, memorial gifts may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 1206 Greenwood Lane, Alamogordo, NM 88310. These will be used for educational scholarships in Otero County.
