R.L. Posey Obituary

R.L. Posey, 87, passed away on Dec. 4, 2014, in Mayhill.

He was born on August 21, 1927, in Alamogordo, to Loyd and Elizabeth (Raley) Posey.
R.L. was raised in the Cloudcroft/Mayhill communities and graduated from Cloudcroft High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army with the 384th Ordinance Tank Company from Feb. 22, 1946, until March 25, 1947. He then attended New Mexico State University, then known as the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts, graduating in 1951 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
R.L. married Patricia Dailey on June 14, 1949, in Mesilla Park. They have six children. While their children were growing, R.L. was involved as a scout leader the with Boy Scouts of America; a program for fathers and sons with the YMCA, formerly known as the "Indian Guides"; a baseball coach with Little League and Babe Ruth League -- as well as various other activities.
R.L. worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. in Bartlesville, Okla., designing special equipment for which he was awarded three U.S. Patents. Wanting to move back to New Mexico, R.L. accepted a job at Sandia Corp in Albuquerque. After five years he accepted an offer with the Air Force Special Weapons Flight Test Center, at Kirtland Air Force Base, as a system safety engineer. In 1975 he was promoted to Director of Safety of the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, a position he held until his retirement in November 1989.
He was a registered professional safety engineer in New Mexico and California. He was honored as manager of the year by the Systems Safety Society and belonged to several honorary mechanical engineering fraternities.
Returning to his family ranch in Mayhill after retirement was always a dream of R.L.'s. Being involved in the community was a priority. He was a board member of the Otero County Farm and Livestock Bureau and was recognized as the volunteer of the year in 2005; chairman of the Cloudcroft Library Board; member of the Alamogordo Library Board; chair of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Depredation Committee at Mayhill; member of the New Mexico Commission of Public Lands Wildlife Advisory Committee, for which his resume was entered into the Congressional Record by US Congressman Steve Pearce.
While living in Albuquerque, R.L. and Patty attended and were involved in St. John's United Methodist Church and here locally at the Cloudcroft United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Patricia Posey of the family home; six children, Gayle (Buster) Hampton of Black Mountain, N.C.; Mark (Nancy) Posey of San Antonio, Texas; Dean (Diana) Posey of Azle, Texas; Catherine (Alan) Hendrickson of Greeley, Colo.; Russell (Michelle) Posey of Copper Center, Alaska; and Nina Posey of Chandler, Ariz.; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Edith) Posey of Alamogordo; as well as two nieces; a nephew; and many cousins.
