Robert Arthur Dockray Obituary

Robert Arthur Dockray passed away May 6, 2015. Robert was born on July 29, 1920, to William Hiram Dockray and Laura (Marshall) Dockray at Dexter, New Mexico.

He lived there with his four brothers and 1 sister the early years of his life. During the next few years, he lived in numerous communities and attended schools in Elk, Hope, and Mayhill, New Mexico. Robert graduated high school at Cloudcroft, New Mexico, in 1940. The following year, he married Dorothy Helen Chandler on December 27, 1941, just after Pearl Harbor.
Robert enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September 1942, and served as a hospital corpsman in the United States, aboard ship, and in the Pacific Theater until November 1945. He and Dorothy were married for 71 years and had 3 children, David (deceased), Karen, and Marsha.

Robert contributed to the community throughout his life. He was a farmer-rancher near Mayhill, New Mexico, after WWII. In 1959, he began working for the U.S. Forest Service and retired after 28 years of service. Robert served as an elder for the Mayhill Church of Christ for over 50 years - teaching classes, leading singing, etc. He also served on the Mayhill School Board until the school was consolidated with Cloudcroft Schools. While living in Mayhill, he often helped neighbors by mending fences, taking care of cattle, and used his John Deere tractor to help anyone. Robert and Dorothy moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, in 2006 because of health problems. Dorothy passed away in 2013, and Robert moved to Desert Peaks Assisted Living Facility.

Robert leaves behind daughter-in-law, Becky Reid and husband, Jerry; David and Becky's children, Geoffrey Dockray, wife, Heidi, and daughters, Peyton and Kelsey; Dan Dockray, wife, Kayla, and children, Chandler, Taylor, and Parker; daughter, Margie Hofstadter, husband, Heath, and sons, Holton and Haze of Canadian, Texas; daughter, Karen McEwen, husband, Jim of Pueblo, Colorado; their daughter, Janine Tenor, husband, Stephen, and son, Andrew of Chico, California; their son, Michael McEwen, wife, Anna, and children, Cameron, Audrey, and Russell of Gunnison, Colorado; daughter, Marsha Vickers, husband, Jon of Las Cruces, New Mexico; their son, Robert Vickers, wife, Mine, and daughter, Laura of Prattville, Alabama; son, Jason, wife, Amy, and son, Chandler of San Antonio, Texas; and son, Richard Vickers of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Survivors also include sister, Marjorie Curtis, sisters-in-law, Pearl and Julia Dockray, and numerous nieces and nephews.

His memorial service will be June 1, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Hamilton O'Dell Funeral Home, 1334 N. Scenic Drive, Alamogordo, New Mexico. There will be a reception following at Peppers Grill, 3200 N. White Sands Blvd, Alamogordo, NM. Also, the family would like to thank Dr. Louis Benevento and Desert Peaks Assisted Living Facility for their exceptional and compassionate care.
