1926 - 2008 Obituary Condolences
Robert Claude "Bob" Vickery, 82, of Alamogordo, passed away at his home on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, surrounded by his loving family.
Robert was born May 9, 1926, in Fairfield, Ala., to Willis Claude and Mary Jerome (Whitfield) Vickery. He and his family later moved to Birmingham, Ala., where he grew up. During his senior year in high school, Robert decided to drop out of school and join the Navy to serve his country in World War II. After serving for three years, he returned home and graduated from high school before attending college at Auburn University. While attending college, in 1949, he met Joanne Jackson, his one true love. They were married June 17, 1950, in Birmingham. Upon graduation in December of 1951, he went into pilot training with the U.S. Air Force. Robert had a distinguished military career until his retirement as a lieutenant colonel in 1974. After retirement, he became a real estate broker and started his own company, Monte Vallejo Real Estate. He was later employed with Alamogordo Federal Savings and Loan as an appraiser. Following his retirement from Alamo Fed, Robert was the treasurer for the Canyon Hills Water Association and was also a volunteer for CAPPED.
Robert was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Throughout his life he was a devoted husband and father who loved his God and his country. He was a true southern gentleman who took great pride in flying our country's flag.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Jo Vickery, of the family home; a son, Robert Steven Vickery, of Brush, Colo.; two daughters, Debra Jo, of Las Cruces, and Kimberly Sue Byers and her husband, Robert Michael, of La Luz; two grandchildren, Jacob Albert Vizcarra and Schuyler Jo Vizcarra, both of Las Cruces; two sisters, Barbara Gail Greene and her husband, Joe, of Montgomery, Ala., and Mary Elizabeth Troup and her husband, Maurell, of Dallas, Ga.; and many other loving family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Richard Emmett Vickery.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 16th and Cuba, with the Rev. Dr. Steve Trout officiating.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery with military honors to be provided by the Holloman Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Friends may call this evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
