Robert Dean Oñate Obituary
Robert Dean Onate, of Alamogordo, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, March 6, 2011. Born in Van Horn, Texas, on Jan. 12, 1959, to Roberto Onate and Peni Luckey, Robb was a loving and devoted husband, father, son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was employed and dedicated to Union Pacific Railroad for 32 years. Robb was a manager of Track Maintenance overseeing track from El Paso to Vaughn. Prior to this position, he was a track inspector covering territory from Sierra Blanca, Texas, to Wickett, Texas. Robb was also a student at Grantham University, Kansas City, where he was working toward a business degree. He spent numerous years with the Van Horn Youth Association, coaching a variety of sports and organizing the season schedules. He was a mentor for many children in the field of athletics. Robb was elected Citizen of the Year in Van Horn, Texas, in 1992 in part for his contributions to the up and coming youth. He was an extremely charitable and giving person who also organized fundraisers to help those with medical needs. He resided in Van Horn for most of his railroad career and had lived in Alamogordo for 13 years.
Robb is survived by his wife of 24 years, Bonnie, of Alamogordo; his daughter Allison, of Alamogordo; his son Isaiah Kennedy and wife, Adriana, of El Paso; grandchildren Michael, Marko and Gianna, of El Paso; his mother Peni Luckey and husband, Bobby, of Brandon, Fla.; his father Roberto Onate and wife, Brenda, of Seaside, Calif.; his sisters Corinne Onate-Dennison and husband, Jim, of Stanley, Velina Nelson and husband, Dennis, of Marina, Calif., Eliza Onate-Irwin and husband, Jesse, of Eureka, Calif.; brothers David Onate and wife, Rocio, of Van Horn, and Adrian Onate, of Seaside, Calif. Robb had an entourage of nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
His greatest love was devoting time to his wife and daughter. Robb could hardly wait for getaways for the three of them to spend time together. A favorite location was a beach, with a day full of shell and crab collecting, and breathtaking sunsets.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Carrillo Funeral Home in Van Horn. Viewing was held Wednesday, March 9, 2011, from 1-8 p.m. and Thursday, March 10, 2011. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011, and the funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2011, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Van Horn with interment to follow at Van Horn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a scholarship fund to his daughter, Allison, at Western Bank, Van Horn.
Pallbearers are Lupe Alvarado, Ray Reyes, Josh Alvarado, Patrick Rodriguez, Paul Reyes and Jesse Guerra. Honorary pallbearers are Tony Alvarado, Mark Reyes, Ruben Reyes, Matt Reyes, Brandon Onate and Samuel Dominguez.
