The Rev. Robert (Bobby) Earl Tekell, 63, of Alamogordo, lost his long, hard-fought battle with cancer and moved into the arms of God on Aug. 24, 2012.
Bobby was born May 29, 1949, in Plainview, Texas, to Lillian E. (Ballew) Tekell and Robert N. Tekell.
The Tekell family moved to Alamogordo in 1956. Bobby attended North Elementary, and Chaparral Junior High School, and subsequently graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1968. At age 18, Bobby bravely enlisted and served his country in Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division from June 1968 until June 1972.
Bobby married Susan Swinford on Aug. 6, 1971. After he separated from the Marines, they returned to Alamogordo where he worked at Swinford Town and Country Mobile Home while he was a youth minister for Grace Methodist Church and attended New Mexico State University.
In 1981, he took a job as an electronic technician at Army Air on Holloman Air Force Base. Bobby assisted in the Columbia Space Shuttle landing at White Sands Missile Range in 1982.
Bobby returned to ministry in 1985 and taught at a Christian school. During this time he was active in missionary work in Mexico. Later, he volunteered as a Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center chaplain and became the head chaplain of the program until he could no longer work.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents.
Bobby is survived by his wife, Susan; his sisters Sue and husband, Fred Van Valkenburg, and Glee Davis; brothers-in-law Paul and wife, Janelle Swinford, and David Swinford; his three children - Christopher Tekell, Michael and wife Nicole Tekell, and Stephen and wife, Chelsea Tekell; two adopted children - Loran and wife, Liza Hoffhiens, and Lisa and husband Tim McFarland; four grandchildren - Mason and Madison Tekell, Danielle and Navie McFarland; two nephews - Joseph A. Van Valkenburg, Jordan Paul Swinford; six nieces - Dawn and Morgain Davidson, Faith Davis, Amanda Van Valkenburg, Danielle Van Valkenburg-Robertson and Vanessa Splonskowski; three great-nephews and one great-niece; and by those who called him "Dad," Bill and wife, Jessica Mihalik, Leland Markley, Vince Zierlin, Ryan and wife Samantha Jackson, Michael and wife, Randi Stacho, and Craig Rosenberry.
The family sends a special thank you to Jennifer Spencer, Bobby's "Price Is Right" watcher and daytime caregiver. The family would also like to thank Erva, Ann, Michelle, Genie and Pat, Bobby's Hospice family, friends and caregivers.
Friends are invited to the visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at Alamogordo Funeral Home located at 2301 E. First St. in Alamogordo.
Services will be at Alamogordo Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012.
The services will be conducted by lifelong best friend, Pastor Billy Tucker.
Interment will follow at Monte Vista cemetery.
Trinity Baptist church will host a reception at noon at Bethel Baptist Church, 1316 N Scenic Drive, Alamogordo.
