Robert G. (Bob) Blankenship Obituary

Robert G. (Bob) Blankenship, 91, of La Luz, passed away January 1, 2016 in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Monday, January 11, 2016, at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Howell Scott officiating.

Bob was born in Wilmar, California to Harris and Edith Blankenship on June 27, 1924. He lived his early years in California, however, the depression was not kind to the family and after losing the trucking business they returned to Laborcita Canyon in Otero County. He was the oldest of 6 children.

After finishing High School in Alamogordo he enlisted in the Navy and served as an electrician on the USS Birmingham during World War II. He had served on the ship for six weeks when it was hit by a kamikaze pilot and the ship sustained major damage. After the war he returned to New Mexico and worked for a short period for a highway contractor building roads in the area. He was then hired by the Balloon Branch at Holloman AFB where he worked for the next 34 years.

After retirement from the base he served as a Deacon at Bethel Baptist Church and he continued to work full time with his orchard and cattle at his ranch in Laborcita Canyon. He ran cattle of his own and for others until he had a major heart attack and he decided to sell them all. After selling his cows, he was content working in his orchard and garden until Macular Degeneration took his eye sight and he was forced to leave his mountain home.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Harris and Edith; one sister Hellen Tenney; two brothers Tom Blankenship and Jack Blankenship; former wife Eula Pearl Linson; one daughter Glenda Mulroy; and one granddaughter Karrie Blankenship.

Bob is survived by his wife Billie J. (Jo) Blankenship of Alamogordo; sons Harris of Alamogordo and Bob Jr. of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; daughter Debra Sitze of Elizabeth, Colorado; sister Pauline Dees of Mayhill; brother Paul Blankenship of La Luz; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his honor to Bethel Baptist Church, 1316 Scenic Drive, Alamogordo, New Mexico. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Aristocrat Assisted Living Center and Alamogordo Home Health Care and Hospice for their support in his final days.

The Blankenship family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services. Cremation will take place at PCS. To sign the online register book, please visit
