Disability Advocate
Robert H. Hawkins, 66, of Alamogordo, passed away Friday, June 5, 2009 at the VA Regional Medical Center in Albuquerque.
Robert was born March 18, 1943 and grew up in Denver, Colo. He joined the USAF in 1960 He was stationed at S.A.C. at Plattsburg, N.Y. through 1964 where he worked in munitions, food service and carpentry. He married Jeanie Campbell on Dec. 16, 1960.  Robert's working career included work in a rock quarry, a laundry, as an aid in a mental hospital and as an electronic technician. He was also self-employed with "Buzz Bee Crafts" where he crafted both children's furniture and toys for adults and children. In 1987, Robert lost his leg and in 1995, a serious car wreck put him in a wheelchair. Even this did not slow him down for long.
In 1998, Robert moved his family to Alamogordo and immediately became involved in disability advocacy. He dedicated much of his life to making Alamogordo accessible to those with disabilities. He was a vocal proponent at the city, county and state level for those with disabilities. Along with Debbie Raymond, Robert worked tirelessly to make Alamogordo wheelchair accessible with curb ramps and access to buildings, parks and playgrounds. 
He was also instrumental in creating the local Disability Resource Center, working with Hope Reed and the Governor's Taskforce on Disabilities. From 1999-2003, Robert served on the Mayor's Committee as an "Advocate for Advancing Disability Awareness." In 2003, he received a plaque from the Community Health Council in recognition of "Selfless Contributions Toward Making Otero County a Better Place to Live." Robert also ran the sound board for KPSA's talk show, "Dialog on Health and Disabilities" for many years.
Robert served as a valued member of the CAPPED, Inc. Board of Directors from 2002-2009. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to CAPPED, Inc.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents Edna and Albert Hawkins.
Survivors include his bride of 48 years wife, Jeanie Hawkins; four daughters, Roberta (Robin) Hawkins, Patricia (Trish) Hawkins, Phyllis (P.J.) Hawkins and Deborah (Deb) Yett; seven grandchildren, Alicia and Freddie Hawkins, Matthew Hawkins, Robert Lawless, Aaron Hawkins, Samantha Berry and Christopher Yett and two great-grandchildren, Aubree Berry and Jadion R. Jackson. He is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Lavery of Aurora, Colo. and Jean Frank of Casper, Wyo.
A "Celebration of Life" memorial Service will be held at The CAPPED Building, 907 New York Ave., Alamogordo Wednesday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m.
Direct Cremation will take place under the care of PCS Direct Cremation Services.
