Robert "Bob" Stephens

Obituary Condolences

Robert "Bob" Stephens, 82, died in his sleep of natural causes Feb. 28, 2008, at his home at Capitan. He was born in Tularosa Aug. 19, 1925, a descendant of four pioneer ranching families. Immediately after high school, he fought in major battles during World War II with the 4th Division Marines. He was shot in battle and waded ashore under fire, and fought on the beaches of Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima in the South Pacific.
At his place in Capitan, he particularly enjoyed and regularly hosted annual picnics for veterans of the Marine Corps. He also served in several capacities and occasionally as a spokesman for the American Legion. After his career as an engineer with the New Mexico Highway Department in Roswell, he retired to his 40 acres near Capitan and enjoyed raising sheep, along with a few chickens and peacocks.
He and his wife were well known as good citizens of the area and were members of the First Baptist Church in Ruidoso.
His wife of 50 years, Thelma Stephens, who was a retired nurse and who won many blue ribbons her vegetables at the Lincoln County Fair, also passed away very recently Feb. 1, 2008.
They are survived by two sons and their wives, Tommy and Debbie Stephens, of Capitan, and Israel "Steve" and Lisa Stephens of Roswell; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at the LaGrone Funeral Chapel, located at 900 South Main, Roswell.
