Ronnie "Max" Townsend Obituary

Ronnie "Max" Townsend, 80, of Seagraves, Texas, passed away on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, in Seminole, Texas.

Officiating at a memorial service will be Dennis Harralson, of the First Presbyterian Church in Seagraves on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014 at 10 a.m. Services are under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home in Seagraves.
Max was born August 20, 1934 in Childress, Texas, to Dave and Hannah Townsend. He graduated from Seagraves High School in 1952.

Max married Juanita Adams in 1955. He then continued his education at West Texas State University, graduating in 1963. Max served two tours of duty in Germany while in the Army. He and first wife Juanita adopted daughter Tammy while living in Germany. Four years later, they adopted another daughter, Cammy while residing in Hereford, Texas.

Juanita preceded Max in death in 1976. A great-granddaughter, Juanita, also preceded Max in death.

After serving in the United States Army, Max returned to Seagraves and worked for the Columbian Carbon Plant number 64. He then went on to teach and coach in Seagraves for 13 years.
Max married Karen Holland in 1976. He was elected Gaines County Judge in 1979, holding this office for 20 years before retiring in 1999.
During his five terms in office, Max served as President of the West Texas Judges' and Commissioners' Association, beginning in 1983. Then in 1986, Townsend was named President of the Texas State Judges' and Commissioners' Association.
Max was a member of the Seagraves Lions Club; he later transferred his membership to the Seminole Lions Club where he served as president.
Upon retirement, Max enjoyed woodworking. He especially enjoyed making furniture out of fence pickets. Much of this furniture can still be found across the west Texas area.
Max was an avid supporter of all types of sports teams in the area. Townsend also filled in as a court bailiff at the Gaines County Courthouse in Seminole, Texas.

Max is survived by his wife of 38 years, Karen, of Seagraves, Texas; a brother, David, of Alamogordo; two daughters Tammy and husband Tom Vannaman of Midland Texas; Cammy and husband Eddie Pierce of Breckenridge, Texas; two stepsons Chad and wife Melissa Townsend of Calif., and Brad Townsend of Charlotte, N.C. Max is also survived by three grandchildren; Crystal, J.T. and Kimberly--as well as a great-grandaughter, Madeland.

The family suggests memorials to the Seagraves-Loop Museum and Art Center, Seagraves EMS or the Senior Citizens of Seagraves.
