Sallie Rey Hammond

1924 - 2010 Obituary Condolences
Sallie Rey Hammond, a 51-year resident of Alamogordo who taught two generations of elementary school students here, died Thursday, March 4, 2010, in Albuquerque of complications from Alzheimer's disease. She was 85. Born June 6, 1924, in New Orleans, Sallie grew up in Albuquerque. She graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1941 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Mexico in 1944.
The following year, she attended the University of Chicago School of Social Work on a fellowship. In 1967, she received her Master in Arts in elementary education from New Mexico State University.
During and after World War II, Sallie worked as a social worker for the New Mexico Department of Child Welfare in Santa Fe. She married Herbert J. Hammond III in 1949, and soon thereafter she stayed home to raise their two children, Herb and Ann. In 1957, the family moved from Santa Fe to Alamogordo, and Sallie went back to work as a second-grade teacher at Heights Elementary School, where she taught for 28 years before retiring in 1987. As an elementary school primary grade teacher, Sallie set rigorous standards for her students, believing that a solid educational foundation in the primary grades was the key to academic success in higher grades and college. In 2005, the Alamogordo Public Schools specially recognized Sallie and her husband, Herb, as outstanding teachers.
In retirement, Sallie served on the board of the Alamogordo Public Library and the Chaparral Council of the Girl Scouts, was president of the BI Chapter of the P.E.O., and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also pursued her hobbies - reading, traveling, genealogy and Southwest history. She was widely read in New Mexico history and particularly knowledgeable about the history of Lincoln and Otero counties. An avid reader keenly interested in history, current events and literature, Sallie had a lifelong devotion to learning, which was tragically interrupted by her affliction with Alzheimer's disease beginning in 2006.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Herbert J. Hammond III, of Albuquerque; her daughter Ann E. Hammond and son-in-law Peter G. Tasso, of Albuquerque; her son Herbert J. Hammond IV and daughter-in-law Myra J. Hammond, of Dallas; two grandchildren, Ariel J. Hammond, of Baton Rouge, La., and Herbert J. Hammond V, of San Antonio, Texas; and a nephew, Mark J. Guiling, of Round Rock, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at French-Wyoming Chapel, Albuquerque. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 3 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in Sallie's name to the Alamogordo Public Library, 920 Oregon Ave., Alamogordo.
