Sally Henderson Obituary
Sally Henderson passed over into the loving arms of her savior on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland.
She was born Sally Lee Shaw on May 15, 1926, in El Paso to Mr. and Mrs. Mason Shaw. She was raised in the San Jose, Calif., area and worked in the canneries during World War II.
After the war, she married Lewis Piro and remained married to him for 38 years until his death. During this time, they resided in San Jose and the Reno, Nev., area. In 1986, they moved to the Alamogordo area. In 1991, she married Fred Henderson, to whom she was married for 21 years until the time of her death.
Sally lived a long and full life, working for many years as a full charge bookkeeper and raising her family. Travel and seeing the wonders of the world filled her retirement years.
She was an active and involved member at Grace United Methodist Church, where she touched many lives. She was active in the Chancel and Cokesbury, served on the board of trustees, attended UMC annual conferences as a delegate, and was very active in the United Methodist Women and Knit for Kids, an organization dedicated to knitting sweaters and caps for those less fortunate. She cherished and was cherished by her family, friends and church family.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Paula and Anne; and stepson Phillip Henderson.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Henderson, of the family home; son Joe Piro, of Pioneer, Calif.; daughter Nancy and son-in-law John Julian, of Alamogordo; brothers Jim Shaw, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kirby and sister-in-law Mary Jane Hollis, of Saratoga, Calif.; grandchildren Tony and Huong Piro, of Pasadena, Calif., Chris Piro, of San Francisco, Joe and Jeanne Julian, of Aurora, Colo., John and Misty Julian, of Alamogordo, and Cara Julian and Damon Alfaro, of Las Cruces; and great-grandchildren Luciana and Miles Piro, Epic, Ariya and Devon Julian, Kyler Gray, Connor Coddington, Alexis Julian, Riley, Cadence Julian-Muff and Asher Alfaro.
She is also survived by stepchildren Sherman Henderson and his wife, Alma, of Albuquerque, and their child Andrea and her daughter Janae; Russell Henderson and his wife, Lucrezia, and their children Liam and Ava; stepdaughter Sheila Carlson and her husband, Marc, of Wausau, Wis., and their children Karin and Matthew; Frank Henderson and his wife, Jan, of Georgetown, Ky., and their children Nathan and Jaimie; stepdaughter-in-law Mercia (Henderson); son Jerry and his daughters Excel and Sabrina, all of Waukegan, Ill.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton O'Dell Funeral Home. Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 1206 Greenwood Lane, Alamogordo. Graveside services will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery. The Rev. Harry Riser will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Don Brumbaugh, Emmett Bannerman, Ed Cole, Don Maurer, John Thomas and Johnny Julian.
Should friends desire, memorial gifts may be made to the Emanuel Scholarship Fund at Grace United Methodist Church.
