Loving husband, father and grandfather
Samie Smith, 81, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at Mountain View Medical Center in Las Cruces.
One of five children, Samie was born, Jan. 10, 1927, in Red River County, Texas, to Les and Ethel Lucille (Moten) Smith. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, Texas.
Smith attended school in Red River County and assisted the family with farming until becoming a decorated member of the Navy and the Army. He proudly served during World War II and the Korean War during the time frame of Feb. 5, 1946, to Sept. 11, 1956. During this period of honorable military service, he was listed as missing-In-action for about one year. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 11, 1956. He was a life-long member of the Disabled American Veterans Association.
As a civil servant, he was employed at Holloman Air Force Base as a cook for 17 years until being medically retired.
Samie was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother and one granddaughter.
He is survived by his loving wife, Christine; two sons, Charles Curtis and Marvin Louis "Bo" Smith; one daughter, Berdenia Louise Shells; 12 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one brother, Jessie Walker, Sr., and a host of other relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Leroy Copeland officiating. 
Interment will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.
Viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at Alamogordo Funeral Home.
