Sandra L. Maxwell
Sandra L. Maxwell, 67, of Alamogordo, passed away unexpectedly at her home Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, after a brief illness.
Sandy was born April 24, 1943, in Butler, Pa., to James and Doris Johnston. She graduated from Everette High School in Washington state in 1961. Sandy married Linwood Tyndall in 1961. Together they had two children, Tami and Kathy, and she later divorced in 1972. Sandy married Donald Maxwell in June 1975.
In 1982 Sandy earned her master's degree in psychology and counseling, working in that field for 13 years before retiring. After her retirement, she was a foster parent for the state of New Mexico and a volunteer at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo.
Sandy joined Bethel Baptist Church in March 2002, where she enjoyed working in the church nursery from January 2006 until May 2010. She was also very active in church Bible studies and a widow's support group called Golden Girls, which were both a huge part of her life. In her spare time, Sandy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and relaxing and reading.
Sandy is survived by her daughters Tami Enriquez and her husband, Pete, of Flower Mound, Texas, and Kathy Hernandez and her husband, Eleazar, of San Antonio, Texas; and sister Donna Poer and her husband, Mike, of Tularosa. Sandy was the proud grandmother to Chris Bednorz and his wife, Chryssa; Ryan Hernandez; Jason Bednorz and his wife, Amanda; Rebekah Bednorz; Adam Hernandez; Tara Enriquez; Joanna Hernandez; Taylor Enriquez; April Hernandez; and Gary and Tosha Tyler.
Sandy is also survived by her devoted best friend Alfonso Benitez, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands Linwood Tyndall and Donald Maxwell.
A memorial service in Sandy's honor will take place Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Howell Scott officiating. A reception at the church will follow.
Should friends desire, donations may be made to the , Bethel Baptist Church, Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center's Auxiliary or any pet-friendly organization.
