Dietitian manager
Sara W. Terrell, 76, passed away May 25, 2008, in Alamogordo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James O. and Ona B. Raines Terrell, and brother James F. Terrell.
She is survived by her sister, Emma J. Terrell, of Dallas; a nephew, James O. Terrell and wife Beverly, of Waco, Texas; a niece, Becky Slater and husband Larry, of Tyler, Texas; sister-in-law Audrey Terrell, of Daingerfield, Texas; great niece, R. Fleming Terrell, of Austin, Texas; many cousins and friends.
She graduated from Henderson High School, then Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas, with a degree in dietetics and nutrition. After an internship at Florida State University, she moved to Birmingham, Ala., to become director of the dietetic department at the University of Alabama Hospital. She left there to move to Alamogordo, and worked at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center as the dietitian manager for 19 years.
Ms. Terrell was also active in volunteer activities at GCRMC, which she continued after her retirement. She started the Christmas Senior Homebound Gift Program, allowing hospital employees to provide individually specific gifts to seniors. She was given a life membership by the GCRMC Auxiliary, or the "Pink Ladies." She was an active member of the GCRMC Auxiliary Scholarship program.
At the University of Alabama in Birmingham, she was instrumental in the development of a dietetic internship program. A scholarship was established in her name for the internship at UAB at the dietetic department.
A celebration of her life will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, in the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bart Montgomery officiating. A reception will be held following at the conference center at GCRMC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to GCRMC Auxiliary Scholarship Fund; 2669 Scenic Drive; Alamogordo, NM 88310.
Cremation will take place locally at PCS entrusted to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home.
