Obituary Condolences

Sean Quigley, 42, of Alamogordo, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009, in El Paso.
Sean was born Jan. 14, 1967, in Alamogordo to Jack and Jane Quigley. He graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1985.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from New Mexico State University in 1992. From 1993 to 1995 he supervised and trained undergraduate student researchers and oversaw the day-to-day operations of the cellular biology and biochemistry lab where he performed research in purification of extracellular matrix proteins, SDS-PAGE, western blotting and immuno-chemistry techniques.
He then earned his Master of Science degree in environmental health and molecular toxicology from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1997, where his research project involved implementing and optimizing a novel gene expression assay involving RNA amplification and reverse northern analysis. This study included RNA extraction from mouse tissues, transfection and plasma purifications of DNA clones in E. coli cells, formation of DNA and RNA probes, northern blotting and expression analysis and quantification of multiple genes simultaneously. This was part of the Coumadin gene study, and the results of this study have saved thousands of lives.
He was a research technologist conducting work in PCR-based genetic analysis to define specific genetic polymorphisms of targeted genes using a novel ELISA-based oligonucleotide ligation assay. He traveled the world as part of research teams and spoke at many conferences worldwide. He was in the process of completing an internship specializing in cardo sonograms. He was also a judge for the International Science Fair.
Survivors include his parents, Jack and Jane Quigley, of the family home; three brothers, Scott Quigley, of Denver, Kevin Quigley and daughters Katrina, of Alamogordo, and Brandy, of Tucson, Ariz., and Darren Quigley and wife, Tera, and daughter Ashley, of Mesa, Ariz.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Robert Scott officiating.
The Quigley family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place locally at PCS.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center; Contributions, J5-200; P.O. Box 19024; Seattle, WA 98109-1024.
