Shelby Fayne Miller, 66, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque.
Shelby was born Sept. 23, 1942, the first of four sons born to V.A. and Edna Miller. After graduating from Ruidoso High School, he went to Texas Tech University, where he graduated in 1965. He and the former Clare Dooley of Uvalde, Texas, were married July 17, 1965, after she graduated from Texas Tech University.
After a brief employment as a buyer with Public Service Co. in Albuquerque, Shelby and Clare purchased the Texaco Jobbership in Alamogordo in 1967. During their business years, they owned and operated a full-service car wash, a service station, and were lessors for other stations, a retail clothing children's store and mobile home trailer park. They also simultaneously owned and operated the West Winds Motel in Artesia, the Satellite Inn Motel, the Storage Center and numerous commercial buildings in Alamogordo. They also developed residential and commercial real estate.
Miller served as a member of the board of directors and past president of the Alamogordo Rotary Club, and has received two Paul Harris Fellow awards, as well as being a governor's representative of the Rotary Club.
He was also a board member of United New Mexico Bank, past president of the Boys' Club (now known as the Boys & Girls Club), vice-president of the Alamogordo School Board, twice served as chairman of the Committee of Fifty of the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce, was past chairman of the Otero County Planning Commission, a member of the board of directors of United Way, a longtime member of the board of directors of the Tiger Sports Booster Club (formerly the Alamogordo Century Club), and was inducted into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame for his work as a volunteer coach and avid Tiger athletic booster.
He was a past member of the New Mexico Amigos, a member of the National Association of Homebuilders and the New Mexico Homebuilders, a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1897, and a life Loyal Sigma Chi.
In 1986, he was a delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business in Washington. He was an active coordinator for U.S. Rep. Joe Skeen. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he, in the past, served on the Council of Ministries.
For many years he coached little league baseball teams, soccer teams, girls' varsity basketball, freshman boys' basketball and eighth grade boys' basketball, with constant and consistent involvement with his children's athletic and school activities. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and enjoyed playing poker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Merle Arthur Miller, Gerald Nelson Miller and Blane Arlan Miller.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Clare, of the family home; his daughter, Cynthia Fayne Miller; his son, Derek Arlyn Miller; and his granddaughter, Jordan Faith Miller, all of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be conducted on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church at with the Rev. Dr. Steve Trout officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow at the church.
Cremation and service arrangements are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
