Shirley Jean (Caskey) Larned Obituary
Shirley Jean Larned Caskey, 78, passed away Aug. 11, 2013. Shirley was born Feb. 16, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas, to Arthur Fred and Madge O'Neal Larned.
Shirley attended public schools in Waco and San Antonio, Texas, where she developed a passion for education. This passion lead to a bachelorette and masters from the University Of Texas at El Paso and a Doctorate of Education from Texas Tech University, where she was a recipient of the Jones Doctorial Fellowship. Dr. Caskey was on the faculties of Texas Tech University, University of Texas at El Paso and the El Paso Community College where she retired as chairperson of the English division in 1988.
After her retirement that passion for education continued, she consulted with schools and colleges, presented workshops in the U.S. and Canada and worked with professional organizations in her specialty areas of women's fear of success, adult learning styles and professional staff development. She was active in religious education and music from childhood, teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir wherever she lived.
Shirley and the love of her life, Owen, loved to travel. Their pursuits of knowledge lead them to travel all over the world after their retirement.
She is survived by her husband, Owen Caskey, of Boise, Idaho; brother Michael Larned, of Cincinnati, Ohio; children Mark Lubianski, of Corpus Christi, Texas; Kay Mantooth, of Boise; Deborah Caskey, of El Paso; and grandchildren Blake and Kelli Mantooth, of Boise; Gregory Lewis and Paige Lubianski, of Corpus Christi; and Evan Kipp, of El Paso. She was preceded in death by her brother Arthur Fred Larned III, sister Peggy Ann Crooks, son Bryan Lubianski and daughter Leigh Ann Caskey.
Her family is especially appreciative of the care by the staff at Emerson House and Hearts for Hospice during her final months. A graveside service is planned for family and friends at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at The Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. An open house will follow from 12-2 p.m. at her daughter's home.
